Just after the passing of the New Year festivities, WhatsApp notified its billions of users worldwide, of a privacy policy change that will share WhatsApp data with Facebook. This news led to a mass shift of WhatsApp users to more privacy-focused applications like Telegram and Signal app. The mass movement is an indicator that many Kenyans are aware of the need for privacy of their information.

Despite the current trend, a large number of Kenyan citizens still remain unaware of the need for data privacy and continue to download and install insecure applications from untrusted third party application stores.

It is therefore necessary that there is continued public awareness on information security laws such as The Data Protection Act and The Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act of 2018.
